Behaviour for learning: Developing effective approaches

This course equips teachers to create calm, focused classrooms where learning can thrive. Drawing on Jacob Kounin’s research and contemporary relational thinking, the course explores how clarity, consistency and teacher presence prevent disruption and strengthen engagement.

Participants will learn how high-quality teaching underpins effective behaviour. The course examines how clear routines, structured transitions, appropriate cognitive challenge and confident communication reduce off-task behaviour before it begins. Teachers will develop a warm and firm approach, combining high expectations with respect and credibility.

– Applying Kounin’s preventive behaviours: clarity, stretch zone, engagement, presence and situational awareness
– Designing lessons that sustain focus through pace and challenge
– Strengthening instructional delivery and classroom presence
– Using proportionate, discreet interventions to restore attention
